Children is the first generation to come of age on the Internets and have created a virtual society of their own. The Internet is a largely hidden world from their parents. Kids are living their lives online and Internet is the continuation of where they exist "socializing". Also, whenever parents installs parental control on their kids computer, their kids actually put a different screen for their parents to watch while their doing something totally different.
* Parents are worried that whenever their kids is on the keyboard, their letting everyone in.
* Whenever kids are online, nobody is in charge of them.
*Parents don't get opportunities to have a face to face communicate with their kids, therefore
they have to email their kids in order to have some attention.
*Parents are worried that Internets was for adults and now its a province for teenagers.

Hey ! This is Tyler Shillingford from your understanding personal computers lecture class=)
ReplyDeleteFirst of all i would like to applaud you for your layout of your blog as a display because it is very organized as well as very informative about the topics that surround the major topic of social networking.
secondly i agree with your thoughts on parents and their control over the internet usage of their teenage children or children in general. Parents really son't get the chance to have a face to face conversation with their kids because the internet serves as their second parents.
Lastly do you think personally that the internet, especially soical networking , has impacted your relationship with your parents or siblings or even personaly the way you go about your daily adventures?

Hey, this is kevin from your CS12.
ReplyDeleteLike the person before, me, I also like your layout, it is pretty cool.
From reading your response, it seems that you are placing all the blame on the parents. You have to understand that the internet is relatively a new concept that is just beginning to branch out. Most parents do not know how to use the internet fully to completely understand it. We need not to blame the parents but blame the user on the computer. We cannot expect for a parent to shield their children from everything on the internet. Sure there are things that help protect some stuff but that reality is that the child is doing it, and unless you are on the computer at that instant, you cannot do anything to stop it.
I believe that the best way of avoiding these problems on the internet is simply the idea of having a family computer where it can be seen, and nothing can be hidden. That is all we can do for now.
Hi, Michelle from cs12....I thought you did a great job with your blog. The appearance is nice and it is very well put. I agree with your pbs comments, but I do have to say that the second life thing is a little weird to me. I understand where its ideas came from to help certain people but it just seems creepy that anybody of any age can be on there pretending to be something that they are not.
ReplyDeleteThe Obama post was great. I think it is cool that he has this happening during his campaign and it must have worked!
I understand that parents can sometimes seem to be too unprotective over their kids or sometime not even know much about the Internet or how it works. However, I do think that the Internet can be a dangerous place for kids if they are not careful with the information they display. Some teens display their entire lives on the Internet's websites like Facebook and Myspace; posting every moment of their day for anyone to see. You never know who is looking at your profile or if someone can be posing as someone else looking to potentially harm you. I believe that the Internet can be a fun form of technology for teens but they must practice caution when using it to ensure their safety.
ReplyDeleteHey,this Pu Zheng from ur CS12 class. After reading ur writing, i do agree that parents are somehow too unprotective over the kids. I think the parents have the respons to learn the good stuff and the risk of internet, and teach the kids to correctly use internet. As long as every one cleared about whats wrong and whats fine to do, internet world would be a joyful place.
ReplyDeleteSame CS12, Danny Chen. I think the protectiveness is actually a 2 way street. some are way to overprotective, which the end results can lead to deviance that results in a greater risk to oneself as opposed to moderate regulation of the internet. Its true that some teens and kids are quite ignorant to the fact that t5he internet is a dangerous place given the right situation, but a personal note would be tha tit takes a serious epiphany for them to realize the truth. other then that, its todays youth attitude coupled with the child rearing ability of the internet as opposed to biological parents that gives rise to current day issues.
ReplyDeleteAt a certain age children are capable of comprehending the differences between right and wrong. They understand the limitations of what they should be viewing, witnessing and incorporating themselves into. I'm not supporting overprotective parents, however the methods to protect children and utilize parental controls, blocks and other things when it comes to internet use is a great tool for concerned guardians. Just as children are kept safe in school where they learn, they must be kept safe on a front where they can be exploited such as the internet, even with all of its educational properties.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your blog i completely understand the fear and the danger that is facing young kids these days on the internet. It seems that more and more parents become to busy to deal and talk tot heir children and so they seek other ways to get what they need and want. the danger that face many kids on sites like Myspace and facebook is unlimited, I am shocked sometimes so see the type of pictures that are put up by 13 year old girls just to get attention from complete strangers. The internet is become and will grow to be an even bigger part of everyones day to day life, and as we can see with the Obama case it can even help you to win an election. But at the same time it should be handled with care especially when it comes to kids.
